Crisis to waste?
During the bleakest days of World War II, a quote attributed to Winston Churchill is ” Never let a good crisis go to waste “. The total number of dead in the nuclear bombs that fell in the two Japanese cities, approximates 236,000; the total deaths due to Covid 19 worldwide, is 600,000 and counting.
So as crises go, this is pretty gargantuan. There has never been anything of the like in living memory.
Yet, those of us in the travel line, cannot let the ” crisis go to waste “
Take the Airbus A380, with its first commercial flight in October 2007, hailed as the future of air travel that would challenge Boeing’s dominance in the skies. Effective Q1-2020 some of the leading airlines, by far the biggest names in the order book for Airbus A380, had decided to progressively discontinue, as they were just not able to fill up the aircraft, meaning more than 500 passengers, on most routes, and this was just about when the pandemic was spreading its tentacles. The staunchest defender of the A380 opted for the smaller A350 and A330 models, and that too, is not taking to the skies as foreseen for this year.
The smaller aircraft models will, of course, continue to fly, taking to the skies with greater frequency as the pandemic recedes over time. In the past, Travel & Tourism Industry have gone through many challenges due to Economic, Social and Environmental issues. However, the Industry had faced such challenges bravely and bounced back. Likewise, the Industry will bounce back this time too. Still, a question in the mind is how to optimise earnings from the “new normal” business activity because this time the recession is expected to spread over a couple of years.
